In today's recessionary economy when disposable income is no longer keeping up with the cost of living, more and more are searching for alternative source of income.

It doesn't come as a surprise that blogging has become one of the most pervasive ways of making money online that has come a long way since the birth of eBay. Blogging may not be the easiest way of making money online but it is certainly not the hardest either.

The latest trend is with children under the age of 17 blogging for money. Not just pocket change either. These kids are making money hand over fist. Some are already making millions with just their online business.

Kids are much more technically advanced than we want to give them credit for. They embrace the internet quickly and aren't afraid to explore and use them.

They have no inhibitions or worries about trying something new. And the start-up cost is almost zero or low enough that they may not have to even use their entire allowance to get started.

One of the most difficult parts of blogging is the daily maintenance and up keep along with finding the advertising and affiliating to make money. Once you have overcome these obstacles there is nothing to it.

Children as young as 8 are doing it with great success. It's their parents that are dumbfounded that it could be that easy.

Kids Prove Us Wrong

As adults we have been taught that "anything worth having is worth working for" and that "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" but our children seem to be proving those old adages wrong.

With the use of the internet, making money online has become easier than ever. It just seems to the adults that it can't be true. We are always looking for the catch to these simple ways of making money.

We believe that it's a "zero sum game". They aren't just going to give it to us for nothing. We in fact over-complicate what seems to be "simple things in life".

Maybe it is time for us to start looking at the world in a different way. This is, after all, the internet generation. We need to start realizing that the computer on our desk can be useful for something other than checking e-mail and sending jokes to our friends. Our children already know this and we just need to catch up.

It's time for us to change and be open to seeing this new generation and the changes in our world. Instead of being upset with our children for spending so much time on their computers we need to understand and be supportive of what they are doing.

And look into new and revolutionary ways of making money the smartest way instead of hard labor - the internet.

This is a new world and the kids seem to be taking the upper hand in it. We as adults have been so resistant to these new advancements that we have cut ourselves off from some of the best sources of income.

Children from 10 years old right on up are doing what we seem to find impossible in this economy. They are making money and having no trouble doing it. Maybe the only adage that we need to be concerned with is "and a child shall lead them".

That is certainly what is happening when it comes to making money on the internet.

why internet marketing

With Google worth more than $200 billion based on nearly $29 billion in revenue last year, and Facebook worth $50 to $70 billion based on less then $2 billion in revenue last, it’s easy to call Facebook’s current valuation hype. Why then would so many investors be willing to purchase a stake in Facebook for so much? We take a look.

The Global Advertising Business

While it’s hard to find hard numbers on the total global advertising market, one report we found from 2009 pegged global ad spending at more than $440 billion. What does this have to do with Facebook and Google? Well, the primary revenue source for both businesses is advertising. One of the best ways to value a business is by analyzing the broad market that is involved in. While Facebook’s Credits business is growing rapidly thanks to the explosion in social games, it still accounts for a small portion of Facebook’s revenue (although it could definitely grow significantly).

While Facebook and Google will most likely never have the majority of all global advertising, this $440 billion figure is a great place to start.

Internet Advertising Growth

The next step is to take a look at internet advertising as a percentage of the total global advertising market. According to the IAB, the total Internet advertising market for the first half of 2010 was approximately $12 billion. If we were to project for the total year, we’d guess that the total Internet advertising market will be around $28 billion as revenue tends to pick up toward the fourth quarter.

That means Internet advertising still only accounts for less than 7 percent of the total global advertising market. Overall, we can make a reasonable prediction that this market will at a minimum double in size as consumers’ attention turns to Internet-powered devices. That would be extremely conservative. If we expect that Internet advertising is going to balloon, as most people in the industry believe, we could make a much more aggressive prediction that Internet advertising could potentially grow to 25 percent of the total advertising market, especially if consumer attention continues to shift in that direction.

That means there’s an additional $80 billion in annual advertising up for grabs on the high end, and an additional $28 billion on the low end.

The Lion’s Share

So who’s playing for that $28 billion? Right now Facebook and Google are the primary competitors in the space, with many other companies, like Twitter, looking to capture large portions of that market. If we were to look into the future and predict that at some point in the next five years, Facebook and Google combined will have 60 percent of that market (not unreasonable considering Google’s revenue is already greater than the entire internet advertising market), and it’s split 50/50, Facebook will be generating $7 billion a year in revenue.

However, if the market is going to grow to the size that we believe, Facebook could bring in $24 billion a year in advertising revenue, a figure which Google basically already has right now.

Marketing Budgets

While the IAB has its own measurement of online advertising, there is a portion of company budgets which falls into “marketing” and both Google and Facebook are also going after those budgets as well. This means there’s easily billions of dollars to be spent on alternative advertising solutions. Take Groupon and LivingSocial, for example. These companies, combined, could easily generate more than $5 billion in revenue this year alone.

As such, we’ll see both Google and Facebook try to get in on the action as the deals market explodes. Facebook has already launched its own deals product, based on Places, and Google has already attempted to acquire Groupon for more than $5 billion. If Facebook can get a piece of these budgets, you could easily see the company adding billions in additional revenue through such sources if successful. For the time being it’s not clear whether or not Facebook Deals will eventually become a new revenue channel on its own; however, we can just about guarantee Facebook will try to get a piece of this explosive market.

With this in mind, I’d say it’s somewhat reasonable to expect at least a few billion in annual revenue through new marketing products for small businesses within the next 5 years. This would bring Facebook up to $27 or $28 billion a year in revenue.

Sizing Things Up

With all this (theoretical) revenue, Facebook actually would have to be worth $200 billion, right? Well, if the market stays the same as it is today (which it of course won’t), Facebook would have a market cap of a little more than $200 billion if valued at a revenue multiple similar to Google’s (similar businesses, similar valuations). That’s awesome! So from the perspective that investors can purchase shares at a $50 billion to $70 billion valuation, and Facebook will have been a great buy!

Can you predict the global market?

Well, if all of the projections which I just laid out are accurate, it actually isn’t that unreasonable. However, there are a lot of things that need to take place in order for these projections to come true. One of those things is that the economy needs to continue to grow for the next five years or more. While things are on the up and up, there’s no guarantee that things will grow quickly. It could take 10 years for the Internet advertising market to grow to the size we projected (instead of five). If that happens, your annual return on a Facebook investment will suddenly be slashed. As such, global market trends will impact your investment.

Is Facebook just hype?

Another perspective is trying to predict where Facebook will be in 10 years. Given that the company has only been around for seven years or so, it’s hard to predict where a company like this will be in a decade. Ultimately, it’s very unlikely that Facebook will just disappear, however it’s definitely something that should be considered. If Facebook fails to perform as expected, and misses projections at any point during the next five to 10 years, Facebook’s valuation would be damaged.

More importantly, if Facebook doesn’t continue to expand or at least maintain its grip on the attention economy (where consumers are spending their time), Facebook’s value to advertisers would drop dramatically and suddenly a large portion of the aggressive market share predicted earlier, will be wiped out.

All things considered

With all of these things taken into consideration, the only remaining component of making the investment is determining what other opportunities you will have to do with that money over the next five years or more. If you think the Internet advertising market is going to definitely grow and that Facebook will simply dominate that market, expecting the company to be worth $100 billion to $200 billion is not completely illogical.

However, if you are conservative, think the market will take five years to double in size and that Facebook will have a smaller fraction of it than expected, other investments would look much more attractive. If you’re a gambler who’s extremely bullish on the Internet advertising business, a Facebook investment really isn’t a horrible bet. Best of all Facebook Credits, or an alternative revenue stream that we don’t know of yet, could prove explosive as the company marches toward 1 billion users.

This means Facebook jaw-dropping valuation of $50 billion (and upwards of $70 billion based on other private transactions), is not that ridiculous as long as Facebook continues to play its cards right, successfully capturing a growing fraction of internet advertising revenue. Keep in mind: All the cards must be played right.

Ever since Sony released that first official photo of Andrew Garfield in the newly redesigned costume for Marc Webb's Spider-Man, which is filming now, the floodgates for amateur set photos have been jammed permanently open, and a nearly non-stop stream of fascinating/distributing low quality shots of Spider-Man have been rolling in. Has the internet become the new Daily Bugle? If you haven't noticed, we didn't post any of these set photos, and there's a reason - it may not be a good one and I may be losing hits, but it's my decision and I'm sticking with it. And in the meantime, we're going to chat about Spidey, at least this once.

Before I get into it, I need to tell you a story. In the early years of FS.net, the big movie that everything was leading up to was Spider-Man 3. I had attended Comic-Con in 2006 (my very first year) and everyone was buzzing like crazy over Venom and Sandman and much more. But then Sony's marketing machine kicked in and in the final 6 months leading up to its release on May 4th, 2007, I was smothered in an endless barrage of media: photos, trailers, clips and more clips! I watched the entire Harry vs Peter snowboard fight at CES in January, which I saw a few times later. Then I attended a press junket in April, which is where an official Beta tape was released containing the entire crane sequence with Gwen Stacey, almost every cool Sandman scene, and half of the Venom transformation in the church. All that was left that I hadn't seen by the time it came out was the final fight between Venom, Spidey and Sandman at the construction yard - which, as we all know, wasn't that cool anyway. I think that explains why Spider-Man 3 felt like such a huge letdown to me.

I was a changed moviegoer after that. Yea, it may seem a little cheesy that I learned some kind of big lesson from not enjoying a movie, but I love the experience of movies and it's my job. From that point forward, I have always tried to limit the amount of footage I see before a movie, and will no longer post any full clips from a film on the site. If I'm seeing something really big (like Inception or Tron Legacy) I will usually stop myself from watching any trailers, TV spots or footage at all for the three weeks leading up to my very first screening. Its definitely helped and I'm happy to always make these choices. In the end, I get to see the full movie as its meant to be viewed, and most of it is actually a surprise but still entertaining to watch when finally seeing it on the big screen - which is ideally the way every movie should be seen for the first time.

So here we are again in 2011 and we've got another entirely new Spider-Man coming next year. No one had actually seen photos of the costume before that first shot, but now that it's out, no one is holding back. And the shots that are making headlines on other movie websites around the web are just horrifying. Not only is the Spidey costume tweaked both in color and function in order to account for certain stunts or CGI sequences, but it just doesn't look right. I would much rather wait to see the vision of Spider-Man that Marc Webb has in his mind, and more importantly his lens, than any shot some paparazzi is taking 300 feet away hiding behind their parked car. Do we really need to see these poor quality photos to be satisfied as fans?

Of course, there are exceptions. In fact, I've tossed up a few different shots in this post for a couple of reasons. I've already been talking about these photos and my dislike of them with Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm. He made the argument, at least for a specific new set of pictures that were just revealed, that there were some neat things to discover by looking at them that readers also might like to learn about, and none of it would ruin the movie. Take, for example, these two photos to the right. We now know that Webb is opting to shoot a lot of the web-swinging scenes practically, with an actual man-in-suit-on-wire stunt rig. In fact, tons of these kind of shots have popped up different places, and there's even some cool videos, too. I'm actually impressed. It's pretty awesome to know that instead of the CGI Spidey flying through New York like the last three films, we're literally getting an actual Spider-Man flying around New York. This is going to look amazing... and in 3D, too. While watching Spider-Man literally fling himself off of a truck in real-life is awesome, I usually prefer not to ruin that scene.

So there we go, that's more than enough justification to post a few of these for you guys. You got me, I get it, a few of them are cool to see. But... that doesn't mean we're just going to start rattling off posts left 'n right about the new yoga positions Spidey's trying on his trainer. Additionally, I am not trying to stop you guys from seeing these. In fact, it's your choice and yours alone, though I'd hope that a few might follow in my footsteps and limit themselves from seeing too much before a movie is released. This happens all too often, like it did with Captain America, and probably will for The Hobbit, too. I just think it's best to show you guys the real, official stuff that they want us to see because that's how it'll look in the movie, rather than the stuntman version that's currently makin' the rounds. It will be better in the end and you're not missing much anyway, don't worry.

This isn't meant to be a pretentious editorial telling you what's best. I get that some folks want to see these photos and they may help build more buzz anyway, but I'm just explaining why I've lost my appetite for posting them. I'm sure I'll continue to remain immensely excited for Sony's newest Spider-Man, but I'll be happier knowing I didn't ruin every scene in the movie looking at paparazzi photos two years out. Every time one of these galleries hits, I usually get emails from someone saying to check them out. I do notice them all, but I skip most of them, mostly because I want to enjoy the new Spider-Man that Webb is cooking up for us. In due time we'll get an official poster, plenty more official photos, even trailers. Then on July 3rd, 2012, a mere 17 months away, we'll finally be able to sit down together in movie theaters around the world to enjoy Marc Webb's Spider-Man as it is meant to be seen - on the big screen (in 3D).

Until then, you'll probably only see official shots on our site (including magazine scans). But to finally shake all these paparazzi shots our of system once and for all, enjoy this last ridiculously goofy shot of Spider-Man running across a street in silver ballet flats. I'm pretty sure he won't look that cheesy in the movie. Capiche?

Capiche?

Is everyone aware of the Paradigm Shift happening right now?

The world is changing at a faster rate then ever, and the computer is to blame. All forms of media have moved to the internet; TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, movies, photos; and it can be overwhelming.

The way we conduct business today is vastly different. Everything is faster, smaller, smarter, and more complex. The learning curve is getting steeper and more challenging and most of us are scared. Scared of change; scared of uncertainty.

However, if you're not from my generation, don't feel left behind in the dust; because this industry, Internet Marketing, has almost instantly popped up out of thin air. Really, there are very few companies that understand all the new technologies and the power of the internet as a whole; and it's such an important issue because these technologies are vital to success in today's business world. That's why we see more 22 year old millionaires than ever!

It may start to become apparent that marketing on the internet is almost a must. Think about it. When was the last time you used the Yellow Pages, newspaper, or magazine to get information? When will be the day when the Yellow Pages are no longer printed? When will be the day when we all wake up and realize the world has passed us by?

To the younger generations it makes perfect sense because we're familiar and grew up with the Internet. Need an answer to a question? Google it! Need to find directions? Google it! In a rush and need to find the closest gas station? Google it from your phone!

The point is that the internet is an extremely powerful marketing tool and should be used to compliment your existing marketing efforts, not replace it. Don't be scared; welcome technology and the internet with open arms. Embrace it, because your livelihood may soon depend on it.

Everyone should have an up to date website with content, a genuine message, and a way for visitors to leave their contact information so you can follow up. If someone comes to your website but doesn't buy, that's the time to spend the money and effort on direct mail, email campaigns, phone solicitations, etc.

It's not about New V.S. Old. It's about the best of both worlds. It's about the added strength that comes when two methods are forged together to form a new stronger method, or product, or business. It's about taking what we know and making it better; and it's the very nature of technology.

Why should businesses advertise on the Internet?

On the internet, customers come to you. They go onto Google, or Yahoo or one of the others and search for products and services, and if you're there on the first page, they come to you. Extremely targeted, interested, self-qualified customers come to you. They Come To You. It's the difference between a cold call and a warm lead.

The traditional advertising model says: Advertise to the largest audience possible, for ideally the least amount of money possible, and hope that a large enough percentage of that audience will convert in order to not only pay for the cost of the advertising, but hopefully, and god willing, profit a bit too.

It's a numbers game, and not a very good one at that.

Internet marketing is the opposite: Advertise to the most targeted audience possible, for ideally the least amount of money possible, knowing that each percentage of traffic is pre-qualified and interested to some degree.

If your traffic is high and you have a website that can convert leads into business, not only can you pay for the cost of the advertising, but it's possible to profit and grow at such a rate that you consume your entire market.(Meaning, the Internet can level the playing field.)

But perhaps the biggest reason to get online is to prepare for the future; so you don't get left behind. The internet is constantly growing, and in order to stay on top of the search engines where people can find you, your website must grow along with it. Even if you do get on top of Google, page one, # 1 and you get people to come to your site, are they buying from you?

In order to convert leads into real business on the internet, you need to provide the marketplace with information. You need to have a good understanding of the internet marketplace because everyone is scared of or annoyed with, spam, pop-ups, and sales promotions; so you must gain their trust.

You also have to be ahead of the curve. You can't do the same thing as the next guy. By the time someone publishes a book about New and Updated Technology and Business Tactics, the methodology is already outdated by the time it goes to press. That's why you have to be ahead of the curve. The people that make the big bucks on the internet are ahead of the curve, and they are also the trend setters; 22 and 25 year old millionaire trend setters.

So who can help?

I suggest an internet marketing company that offers a complete solution. If you have one company build your website, optimize your site, maintain your internet presence you'll save time, money, and headache.

Rothman Marketing (www.rothmanmarketing.com) builds custom advertising and marketing solutions around their client's business, tying everything together into one integrated marketing plan. By eliminating many different vendors from one single marketing campaign, they can typically lower the overall marketing budget. They have a track record of success and the service doesn't cost an arm and a leg; cheaper than the yellow pages.

Essentially they do whatever necessary to generate business for their clients using the internet. From fixing and building websites to top search engine placement to professional writing services, Rothman Marketing has cutting edge products that get results. They design custom internet marketing solutions, and they're pretty darn good at it.

personal finance and budgeting

The theory is simple: "If you don't have the money, don't charge it. Try to leave your credit card at home and only use it to pay bills," advises April Lewis, director of education for Consolidated Credit Counseling Services. Then immediately pay off your credit-card balance. As for old credit-card debt, sit down and commit to paper a plan for paying them off. Go for a quick hit, like paying off the smallest balance first, or decide to take on the highest rate card first. Get the job done.

Here's a second tip: Be proactive about managing your credit. Call up your lender and ask it to lower your interest rate. Usually, lenders will lower callers' rates by 2% to 3%, says Scott Gamm, founder of HelpSaveMyDollars.com. Also check your credit report. You can check your credit for free at annualcreditreport.com, for example. If you see mistakes, contact the credit agencies and get those mistakes corrected. If errors are dragging down your score, eliminating them can boost it to where it belongs and make you eligible for better rates.

2. Think automation

Free online banking tools can make it easier to manage your finances with less work. To help grow your savings, for example, you can schedule regular transfers from your checking account. Manisha Thakor, author of Get Financially Naked: How to Talk Money With Your Honey, suggests setting up the transfer of a set amount of money into your savings account every pay day.

Also automate recurring bill payments so you never miss a due date or pay a late fee, which sends money down the drain. Even without late fees, timely payments are key: 35% of your credit score is based on your ability to make payments on time. If you sign up for automatic payments, however, make sure to check your monthly bills for errors. One other caveat: "Make sure you have enough cushion in your checking account to avoid any overdrafts" before setting up auto-payments, money coach Lora Sasiela says.
